The secret behind Gendha Phool (Marigold)

July 13, 2009
Recently I heard the song ‘Gendha Phool‘ from the movie Delhi 6. I know it is quite late for me to write about this song, as the audio and the movie was released long back. But my bad, I came across this song only recently. I was instantly mesmerized by the song the second I heard it. But I had hard time to understand it (I am not native Hindi speaker).

I googled for ‘Gendha Phool’ and went through the information. I found that it is a Chattishgarhi folk song, which is quite impressive, as I am so much into folk song, as most of them represent something about the people living in the particular region. Then I went through different blogs where they explained about what the song represents.

So it is about a woman who narrates her life in her in laws house. She shares about the happy times she spent with her husband and also the other hard times she had to go through with his family members.

Here is the line ‘Sasural Gendha Phool’ – In laws are Marigold flower.
I didn’t find proper explanation for this particular line. It is clear that she is comparing her in-law’s house with marigold. I google about marigold to know about its characteristics.

Marigold is an Inflorescence (group or cluster of flowers). Inflorescence, as in every petal of Marigold is a complete flower in itse lf. Even though each petal is a flower by itself, the beauty of Marigold lies only when they are all together. So, now the line “Sasural Gendha Phool” makes a lots of sense. Also this song beautifully justifies the joint family concept.

The song goes like this;

Sainya ched deve
My husband teases me

Nanad chutki leve
My sister-in-law taunts me

Sasural genda phool
In-laws are Marigold

Saas gari deve
Mother-in-law abuses me

Devarji samjha leve
Brother-in-law consoles me

Sasural genda phool
In-laws are Marigold

(she goes on explaining how she misses her husband when he is out for business and remembers their time together and how she admires him and his uniqueness)

The reason she compares in-law’s house with marigold is because, every person in a family is unique and complete in their own way even then they make a complete family only when they stay together. This can be applied to any family.
Though she is not completely happy with the way she is treated by her in-laws, she looks at it with optimism. Which is quite good and which can be found in most of the Indian women who to adjust to the new environment (read in-laws house) they move in.

This is a simple folk song which teaches us to look at problems with optimism.

And not to forget the music is by A.R Rahman :D
