Hand written Magazine

Writing was considered to be a reliable form of transmitting information. Today we transmit information through digital form. Which is considered to be more reliable and secure than physical writing.

Writing has gone through vast changes. Earliest writings could be traced to rocks and cave inscriptions. In ancient time, writing was done in pictorial representation. Later writing system evolved and different civilization used different forms of writing and different methods of writing. But the reason was only one, to record history or to transmit information.

Late 20th century has seen steep changes in every field. Writing too adapted the newest form based on technology and necessity. We have read about newspapers and notices during medieval times. Most of them are hand written. The face of media changed when printing was introduced. Later there was a tremendous change when digital media was introduced. And with internet, transmitting information has become easy. Now, we don’t have to wait for months to get an information. Until few decades ago, when communication was not as sophisticated as today, we had to wait for days or weeks to get information from other part of the world. Now we get news within seconds.

Today we have a generation that do not read news on news paper or read novels on books. And we do not miss them too. We are comfortable with digital books and e-papers. We can read them anywhere and anytime. But print media always has its charm.

I read lots of books and I prefer to read them on print. One of the most precious book that I have in my library is a hand written magazine. It was gifted to me by my mother. It is a Tamil literary book called Ilakiyam, means Literature. I don’t have much information about the book, but the book says that it is the 2nd issue. The book is entirely hand written and also the images are hand drawn. It has novels, poems and art.

The book was based from Pondicherry and was first written on 10/08/1963 and was passed on to each writer, where they could write and sign their article at the end with the date. The book has changed hands and got filled in by different writers and the last article was dated on 23/08/1970.  And the book totally has 362 pages. Probably the chain must have been broken. And the book has mother India in the cover page.

I always feel proud when I hold the book in my hand. It could be just 40 years old, but I feel like having a piece of history in my hand with all those hand written poems, stories and art work. I have heard of people who own palm leaf writing. I just envy them. Here are some pictures of the book.

I just took photograph of the book. Since the book is very fragile I am unable to scan it.

that is amazing. I never knew about such magazine and to actually have such treasure in your collection makes me envy you. And I do agree with you that reading on print has its own charm, because while doing so I feel actually immersing in the contents of the text and which can never be replaced by e-books. Thanks for sharing such a beautiful and rare work of art. :)

    Wow, this is beautiful!

I am also currently reading a few hand-written and typewritten magazines dating back to about 1971-1981. In this age of Internet, I really find them very interesting and antiquated…

This is my first time here and I'm pretty much impressed!

@Kazu, True, I print medium will never lose its charm. But digital medium gives us more flexibility.

@Parth, Thx. its great to hear that you have some handwritten magazines. Write about them on your blog sometimes with picture. I would love to see them. Digital medium helps us to share such antiques around the world which is not possible to see otherwise.

Well, I read lots of novels in book format, and I have never read an e-book in my life and have no wish too either, what is the use of reading a novel when you cant hold the book in your hands, how can you curl up in a chair and read it comfortably! I think e-books take away have of the pleasure of reading and I will continue to read in paper format! and I hope many other people will too. Lets not allow books to become a rarity!

Hi Joseph, Welcome to my blog. Even I love to read novels in book format. Its bit inconvenient to read lengthy novels in e books. At the same time I find it convenient to read weekly magazines online, as most of the articles dont exceed five pages and can be read anywhere.
