Happy Tamil new year – Puthandu Vaazhthukkal
Tamil new year is generally referred as ‘varuda pirapu’ which literally translates into birth of the year. Tamil new year has it own controversy regarding the day it is celebrated. According to the Tamil Nadu Tamil New Year (Declaration) Bill, 2008, Tamil new year falls on 14th Jan or 1st of the Tamil month Thai coinciding the harvesting festival Pongal. But it has not been widely accepted by people and has been challenged in court. Most people celebrate Tamil new year on the 1st of the Tamil month Chittirai which usually falls on 13th or 14th April. Freshly made ‘Maanga Pachadi’ (Mango condiment) is made on this day, which is a mixture of green mango, jaggery, tamarind juice, mustard seeds and fresh neem flowers.
New year in India or particularly in the South Asia region mostly falls during this period. So, Wish you all a Happy New Year!
