Nadunisi Naaygal (Midnight Dogs) starts in an interesting pace, but slips within the first few minutes. Also the movie strongly reminds me of Sigappu Rojakkal.
It’s refreshing to see a Tamil movie without songs after a long break. The film pathetically drags at many places and even some scenes are stretched too long. I saw a few people leaving the theatre within the first half hour, which might be due to the unusual orgy scene in the movie.
Apart from the pathetically slow first half, annoying voice overs and the lengthy scenes, the movie is watchable – if you are someone who crave for different genre movie. The second half of the movie is gripping, that is actually when Sameera Reddy character is full fledgy introduced and if you successfully sit through the first half.
Gautam Menon has to be appreciated for talking about male child sexual abuse. But the core message gets lost in the chaos and we end up watching a psychotic sexual predator instead. The actors pulled a decent performance, except at places where the lead character played by Veera Bahu looks and sounds funny. I could not stop wondering if it was intentional.
Its really sad to see movie after movie showing victims turning into predators. It would be nice to see a movie where they actually talk about child abuse and not about the sexual predator he turns into, which is after all not true in many cases. One cannot deny the existence of such predators in real life, but the movie uses the core issue as an excuse for the screen play and makes us forget the child who was abused and the paedophile. And as said earlier, the message gets lost in the serial kidnap, rape and murder. Sadly, we are reminded about child abuse only during the end note. Nevertheless, kudos to Gautam Menon for trying out something different.
